The shipwreck beach or Navagio beach is the main tourist attraction of Zakynthos, we could even call it its “cover image” appeared so many times on magazines, guides and tourism sites to have become a sort of icon of vacations in Greece: it is considered not only the most beautiful beach of Zakynthos but also one of the most beautiful of Greece and the Mediterranean.
No matter how many times you have seen photos of Navagio beach, nothing can prepare you for its grandeur. Enclosed between two enormous promontories along the western coast of Zakynthos covered with vegetation and bathed by a sea of an extraordinary blue color, the beach enchants visitors thanks to its crystal clear turquoise waters that seem to come out from a postcard.
The beach, nowadays one of the most photographed, is called “del relitto” (of the wreck) because right in the middle of the small tongue of white sand there are the remains of a cigarette smugglers’ boat wrecked here in 1983: over the years the wreck has been slowly covered in part by sand and now it looks like a strange creature that inhabits the bay.
It is advisable to visit the beach early in the morning, with few tourists and calm sea.
Unforgettable and unmissable is the view of the beach from the top of the cliff: to admire it in all its splendor you have to drive along a paved road that is located halfway between the mountain villages of Volimes and Anafonitria and that leads to a parking lot. A suspended viewing terrace overlooks the bay giving you an exceptional vantage point from which to take photographs and enjoy the spectacle.
Navagio beach is definitely the most photographed place in Zakynthos: take a look at the pictures before going to see it in person!
The beach can only be reached by sea using the small daily tours departing from Porto Vromi: these kind of taxi-boats are organized by local sailors and set sail every hour.
